Charged defects and phonon Hall effects in ionic crystals

نویسندگان

چکیده

It has been known for decades that a magnetic field can deflect phonons as they flow in response to thermal gradient, producing Hall effect. Several recent experiments have revealed ratios of the phonon conductivity longitudinal oxide dielectrics are larger than $10^{-3}$ when mean-free-paths exceed wavelengths. At same time $\kappa_{H}/\kappa_{L}$ is not strongly temperature dependent. We argue these two properties together imply mechanism related scattering from defects break time-reversal symmetry, and we show Lorentz forces acting on charged produce substantial skew-scattering amplitudes, effects consistent with observations.

Electron and phonon renormalization near charged defects in carbon nanotubes.

Owing to their influence on electrons and phonons, defects can significantly alter electrical conductance, and optical, mechanical and thermal properties of a material. Thus, understanding and control of defects, including dopants in low-dimensional systems, hold great promise for engineered materials and nanoscale devices. Here, we characterize experimentally the effects of a single defect on ...

Distributions of Charged Defects in Mixed Ionic - Electronic Conductors

General analytical solutions to transport equations are presented for a mixed ionic-electronic conductor (MIEC) subject to various electrical and chemical conditions at the surfaces. The derived general expressions can be used to predict the steady-state distributions of defects and electrical potential within the MIEC as a function of an external stimulus for transport: an electric field, a gr...

The Volumes of Formation of Schottky Defects in Ionic Crystals *

In this paper we calculate the volumes and energies of formation of Schottky defects in the alkali halides NaCl, NaBr, KC1 and KBr. Both the polarisable point-dipole and a simple shell model are evaluated. The calculation uses a generalised and extended Mott-Littleton approach in conjunction with results derived previously by the lattice statics method of Kanzaki. The polarisable point-dipole m...

Spin Hall Effects Due to Phonon Skew Scattering.

A diversity of spin Hall effects in metallic systems is known to rely on Mott skew scattering. In this work its high-temperature counterpart, phonon skew scattering, which is expected to be of foremost experimental relevance, is investigated. In particular, the phonon skew scattering spin Hall conductivity is found to be practically T independent for temperatures above the Debye temperature T_{...
